Frequently Asked Questions

General Information

  • Your guided hike includes certified local guides, local transportation, group safety and emergency gear, permits, all trip planning and logistics, light snacks and non-alcoholic drinks.

  • Personal hiking gear (boots, backpack, clothing, etc.), accommodation before/after the trip and travel insurance.  For accommodation I recommend Bear Ridge Cabins, or the Nakusp Hot Springs Chalets.  Guide Gratuities. Tipping is optional but appreciated. A common guideline is 10–20%, cash or e-transfer.

  • Trips allow up to 6-8 guests per hike, ensuring an intimate experience, stronger connection with your guide, and flexibility to adapt to group interests and pace.  NOTE: AME can transport up to 4 participants.  Extra participants will have to transport themselves to the trailhead.  Most of the roads to the trailheads are rough logging roads and vehicles MUST be in good condition.  High clearance and 4x4 is strongly recommended.  

  • Most trips require a minimum of 2 participants.

    Solo hikers will be contacted to discuss options such as rescheduling, joining another trip, or paying a small surcharge to proceed privately.

  • Most guided hikes are suitable for ages 16+, with some trips requiring higher minimum ages due to difficulty or remoteness. Younger participants may be considered case-by-case with a guardian.

  • Absolutely!  Alpenglow Mountain Escapes can create private and custom hiking trips tailored to your group’s fitness, goals, and interests.

  • Mountain weather is unpredictable. Expect a mix of sun, rain, wind, and cooler temperatures even in summer. Dress in layers and prepare for variable conditions. Your guide provides a detailed packing list.

  • Tipping is optional but appreciated. A common guideline is 10–20%, cash or e-transfer.

    Payment and Cancellation Policy

    Full payment is due at the time of booking for half and full day hikes.

     Final acceptance of any participant is subject to receipt and review of all required waivers, screening questionnaire/medical forms, and full payment.

    Full refund if the participant cancels 30 days prior to the booked trip.

    50% refund if the participant cancels 14 days prior to the booked trip.

    No refund if the participant cancels 7 days prior to the booked trip.

     Minimum Group Requirements, Itinerary Changes

    All Alpenglow Mountain Escapes trips require a minimum of 2-4 participants booked to proceed. If this minimum is not met, Alpenglow Mountain Escapes reserves the right to cancel the trip and will provide participants with a full refund. We encourage early booking to help secure your chosen adventure.

    All Alpenglow Mountain Escapes trips may be subject to itinerary changes and cancellations based on circumstances outside our control, such as:

     

    Trail Conditions

    • Snowpack levels/Avalanche Hazard (We will not be snowshoeing in any avalanche hazard terrain)

    • River conditions

    • Road Conditions

    • Wildlife activity in the area

    • Park or land closures

    • Forest fires

    • Unforeseen weather events and unsafe conditions

    Participants’ costs for a trip will remain the same, regardless of itinerary changes.

    If a trip or reservation is canceled due to the above circumstances beyond Alpenglow Mountain Escapes control and no alternative itinerary is available, participants will receive a full refund.

    ​Alpenglow Mountain Escapes is not responsible for additional expenses incurred related to travel preparation, including non-refundable airfare, equipment, clothing, visa fees, or medical expenses. Travel, medical and rescue insurance is strongly recommended.

  • Safety is our priority. Trips may be canceled in extreme conditions. You’ll receive a weather update ~24 hours before your trip. Rain is not typically a reason to cancel.


Hiking Abilities

  • Trips are designed for people with moderate fitness and some hiking experience. Distance and elevation vary by difficulty level. Private or custom trips are available for slower-paced options.

  • Not always. Beginner-friendly options exist, and guides provide coaching. More challenging hikes benefit from some prior hiking or backpacking experience.

  • Hikes are rated Easy, Intermediate, or Advanced based on distance, elevation gain, terrain difficulty, and trail conditions. Each hike page includes these details.


Travel Questions

  • Meeting locations vary by trip and will be provided in your pre-trip email package. Assistance with planning arrival logistics is available.

  • Yes, up to 4 passengers. For additional participants, high-clearance vehicles are recommended.

  • Yes! Ensure it’s suitable and in good condition. Guidance is available upon request.

  • All program gear is included—a rare value not offered by competitors.

  • Sturdy, comfortable hiking boots with good ankle support and grip are required.
